As the War on Terror stretches into its 18th year, Senators Bob Corker (R-TN) and Tim Kaine (D-VA) have introduced a new Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF), S. J. Res. 59, that would give permission to expand the War on Terror to Africa, Yemen, and Syria.
Instead of giving permission first, Congress would need to muster a full 2/3 majority vote in order to stop the executive branch from starting any new war that can be connected to “global terrorism.”
The Constitution gives Congress the exclusive authority to declare war, but S. J. Res. 59 gives that power away to the president and his generals. Tell your senators that the duty to send our brave troops to war rests with them and not the president, and urge them to vigorously oppose any attempt to release their hold on this crucial power.
Contact your senators and demand that they oppose the Corker-Kaine Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF), S. J. Res. 59.
